Monitoring child activity and sleep quality are as important as monitoring vitals. It gives parents/carers the opportunity to aid their child in a timely manner, keep a proper daily schedule to aid well-being.
The Activity Monitor is created for monitoring a child’s current activity levels and in most children it should be able to detect rapid motion and other unusual behaviour.
By the term “Activity” we mean a set of stages, classified by the child’s level of motion and its intensity. We have determined four sets of activity:
- Sleep - child is motionless, or experiencing short-term motions, typical for sleep;
- Calm - child experiencing occasional low-intensity motion, typical for calm wakefulness;
- Active - child experiencing regular mid- or high-intensity motions, typical during physical
activities, game playing, emotional outbursts; - Unusually Active - child having rapid bursts of hand/body shaking lasting more than 10 seconds or changing hand position intensely, which we classify as non-standard activity.
In summary, the “Activity” function is used to:
- Track Sleep, Calm, Active and Unusually Active states and their duration;
- Notify parents/carers of unusual movement/activity which is not typical for everyday routine;
- Notify parents/carers when their child is awake;
Monitor child's daily activity via accompanied 24H graph.
The activity status is changed immediately according to the current activity state, except “Sleeping“ state. “Sleeping“ state is detected automatically within ~15 minutes after the child has become calm and motionless, meaning that they have fallen asleep.
The “Awake” notification works in conjunction with Activity states. It is pushed when the child’s activity changes from “Sleeping” to any other state. The notification won't be pushed if Sleeping mode is exited manually by tapping the icon.
An “Unusually Active” status is intended to notify parents/carers about unexpected rapid motion or atypical activity from their child. It should not appear during physical activity, even if a child is jumping, running or waving their hands, nevertheless, this is possible if a child shakes their hand with high frequency for a number of seconds.
The sequence of activity stages for the last 24 hours is observed in the “Activity dynamics” chart. The start time of every stage is acquired by tapping on the chart area and moving the cursor line by using your finger.
In the alerts history, accessible from the home screen, a new alert of “Unusual activity” state has been added.
